Linux on a Toshiba Satellite A300 11X
I’m writing a series of posts in English about my experience with a brand new Toshiba Satellite A300 11X and Linux. The choise of English is, of course, to help a larger audience installing Linux on this particular laptop.
This will not be a single post since I don’t have the time for that right now, so I’ll make 2 or 3 posts abount my first days with Linux and The A300.
First of all, here goes the laptop specifications:
Processador Intel® Core™2 Duo T8100 2.1 GHz FSB: 800 MHzLevel 2 Cache: 3 MB
RAM: 3,072MB DDR2 RAM (667 MHz)
HD: 250 MB S.M.A.R.T
Screen: Toshiba TruBrite® WXGA TFT High Brightness 15.4″ 1,280 x 800
ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 3470 com tecnologia HyperMemory™ 128 MB VRAM 16x PCI Express
Marvell Yukon 88E8040T PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controlle
PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection Intel
Ok, this is the main hardware. Looking at it propably you can think of some problems with the graphic card, and you’re right in some extent.
I tried Linux in 3 diferent ways. The first was a Ubuntu Hardy Heron (8.04) LiveCD. It booted with no problems until GDM. After login the desktop never appears. Killing X does not help because a bunch of erros keep sliding down the command-line and I can’t even write anything.
The nex post will be with my experience with Debian Lenny Beta. Stay tunner!
